Enormous stress, pressure, constant demands, growth opportunities; a deep love for your family, a passion for your vocational calling, and strong desire for your life to still somehow reflect a sense of healthy margin and balance. I continue to learn largely from my mistakes and by taking some time to look in the rearview mirror. I'm still a work in progress, but I'm slowly recalibrating from a life of SURVIVE to a life of THRIVE. I feel like this has to be a daily pursuit, with a reckless abandonment of former patterns, while very purposefully and intentionally creating a new normal for this life........my life.
My 7 Daily Commitments for moving from SURVIVE to THRIVE:
1. Identification. Know Who You Are. If you are unsure of your identity, you will allow others to pressure you into their mold. Trying to be someone you are not causes way too much stress.
2. Dedication. Know Who You Want to Please. You can't please everyone. Just about the time "Crowd A" is happy, "Crowd B" will be upset with you. Don't let the fear of rejection manipulate you.
3. Organization, Set Clear Goals. Preparation prevents pressure but procrastination produces it. You work by either priorities or pressures.
4. Concentration. Focus on One Thing at a Time. You can't chase two rabbits at the same time! Learn how to handle interruptions without being distracted from your primary goal.
5. Delegation. Don't Try to do Everything Yourself. We get tense when we feel it all depends on us. Don't allow the fear that others may not do as good a job as you, or that they may do a better job than you, to keep you from asking for help.
6. Meditation. Make a Habit of Prayer and Reflection. This daily discipline is an amazing stress decompression chamber. Reflect on pressures and problems, evaluate your priorities, rediscover the path for successful living, and be still for a while.
7. Relaxation. Take Time to Enjoy Life. Balance is the key to stress management. Become spontaneous once again, You work hard; play hard. Some times the best professional development you could engage in would be to go take a nap. Quit apologizing for taking time to rest and for having wide open spaces in your calendar. Permission granted.
We were wired for more. We were made to THRIVE.
